New On the Move Vortex offroader

Peter Quilty — 26 August 2016

Celebrating a decade of caravan production, Melbourne’s On The Move Caravans (OTM)  has successfully built an offroad warrior combining a super-tough body armour with a refined contemporary elegance behind its bulletproof peripheral.

OTM’s Lennie Mifsud is calling it their ‘toughest van yet’ so CW put it to the test at Bonnie Doon and Lake Eildon, Vic.

The birthday edition really raises the bar over previous OTM models, setting a standard in offroad caravan manufacturing that may prove difficult to match.

Specifically designed for grey nomads that head off on the road to nowhere for 6-8 months at a time, the Vortex sports a polystyrene composite frame and flat composite cladding. But what lies underneath is a lightweight Innovative chassis and Al-Ko IRS tandem suspension. It rides on 16in alloy wheels with 265/75 R16 mud-terrain tyres, and boasts a radial designed drawbar which enhances its structural integrity.

Not only will the Vortex handle rough terrain and varying conditions, its off-grid capability comes to the fore courtesy of twin 120Ah lead crystal batteries and a fully integrated battery management system, 300W of solar power, dual 95L fresh water tanks and a 95L grey water tank, a 190L 12V compressor fridge/freezer, gas heater, washing machine, exterior shower, and a custom pull-out kitchen complete with Weber Q.

With two spare wheels on the A-frame, there is provision for a small boat trailer and boat motor to be affixed to the rear. And there’s also a full-length fishing rod holder and a full-length toolbox that can hold a generator. Also, an ingenious space-saving initiative is having the electrical suite located in an external hatch behind the fridge.

Internally, the Vortex is modern and stylish and points loudly to Jennifer’s interior design expertise. It comprises a practical and spacious kitchen, lounge and bathroom, but the compromise is a smaller bedroom.

Obviously the eye-catchers are the voguish café dinette, fibreglass floor and modish green LED strip lighting – plus a Sweep-O-Vac!

And the all-black taps, shower attachments and porcelain ensuite basin accentuate the interior décor, including modern CNC matte black cabinetry that eliminates finger smudges.

On The Move is a two-time categoru winner in CW's Best Aussie Vans awards with the Grenade (2014) and the Traxx (2015) winning their categories. Will the Vortex make it a trifecta for On The Move?
