More caravans than ever on our roads

Laura Gray — 30 August 2016

New figures released on August 23 by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that caravan registration growth continues to outstrip all over RV types, growing by 5 per cent in the year to January 2016.

There are now 554,540 registered caravans on Australian roads. Campervans had the second highest growth, with 4.3 per cent over the same period, bringing the total number of registered campervans to 60,899.

Overall, there was a 4.9 per cent increase in recreational vehicle registrations, following on from a 5.4 per cent increase the previous year. The total number of RVs on our roads today is now 615,439.

Reacting to the statistics, the Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CIAA) said the positive growth was fuelled by low fuel prices and low interest rates, both of which encourage discretionary spending, as well as the relatively low Australian dollar, which leads people to holiday more at home.

"The current conditions are the perfect storm, creating far-reaching opportunities for the entire country," the CIAA said. "It isn’t just the caravanning and camping industry that wins here, it’s the local communities who benefit from jobs created and the vast range of businesses that service the visitor economy. And of course, the tourists who continue to enjoy the unique Australian experiences that the caravanning and camping lifestyle delivers."
