Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) is distributing free cleaning kits at visitor centres close to the Pilbara, to encourage road users to clean up during their journey.
Initially trialled by KAB in SA, the foundation is extending the trial to WA, by distributing 300 Outdoor packs each to visitor centres in Karratha, Newman, Roebourne and Port Hedland. The free Outback pack contains gloves, tongs, trowel, heavy duty plastic bags and information about road safety, vegetation and habitat protection.
Keep Australia Beautiful Council chair Mel Hay said the initiative would target caravan and camping clubs, 4WD groups and grey nomads because these groups often visited remote areas and encountered litter in what were otherwise pristine landscapes.
“WA has many of Australia’s most amazing natural features, unfortunately it also has the most litter. It is an absolute shame,” he said.
The Outback packs also include a questionnaire and survey form and the data gathered will provide KAB with useful information that will assist in devising litter-reduction strategies.
