The new-release Legend Trackline Off-Road gives me the distinct impression it could sustain some real punishment and turn the other cheek. That is, it wouldn’t bat an eyelid going tete-a-tete with our iconic outback trails. This 5.98m (19ft 7in) offroad brute gives off a warhorse feel with its battle-hard but ruggedly handsome exterior. However, its sparkling interior really shows it’s a rough diamond.
I can certainly visualise tackling crossings such as the Tanami Track and the Gibb River Road in this van. However, it had to contend with much more sedate environs during this review.
The Trackline’s offroad capability starts with a lightweight but sturdy 6in G&S SupaGal chassis, with a 4in riser that provides excellent ground clearance. It also rides on a robust G&S Control Rider suspension, 12in electric brakes, 16in alloys and MPC all-terrain tyres. That’s matched by an indisputable off-grid presence courtesy of dual 120Ah AGM batteries, two 95L fresh water tanks and a 120L grey water tank, and twin 150W roof-mounted solar panels. Quite simply, the Trackline is a go-anywhere van that ensures lengthy stays off the beaten track.
A mesh stoneguard provides front-of-van shielding, and also housed on the extended A-frame is a Vehicle Components Hitchmaster DO35 coupling, water tap with checkerplate guard, and twin 9kg gas cylinders propped in front of a large toolbox with a generator slide-out tray on the offside and a storage compartment on the nearside that could easily be substituted by a Weber Q slide-out tray. But I did notice the omission of sway control, which is optional.
The van’s front is also protected by high checkerplate and durable alicomp cladding above. It also has large stainless steel grab handles at the front (and rear) that can be used as hangers for clothing and/or towels.
The Trackline’s rear is aesthetically accentuated by striking decals and round LED taillights, along with the practicality of high checkerplate, a worklight and reversing camera, exterior shower, twin 20L jerry can holders, and an easily accessible spare wheel mounted on the three-arm bumper bar. I’m also a fan of its full underbody armour, so that airflow doesn’t get caught up in the water tanks and plumbing etc.
But I was surprised that the Trackline’s storage was limited to a full-width tunnel boot and toolbox, considering it can accept a whopping 1100kg payload. And I reckon the inclusion of a slide-out kitchen, albeit there’s a gas bayonet, would only serve to increase its appeal.
The Trackline has a tough outer layer, but it’s butter-soft inside. And in true signature Legend Caravans style, all acrylic cupboard doors are rubber-lined and have exclusive chrome, button-less, user-friendly Italian square handles.
Its swish front bedroom exudes extreme comfort courtesy of a caravan-queen-size bed with pillow-top innerspring mattress and bed frame on gas struts, but there’s also abundant light and ventilation thanks to panoramic double-glazed windows and a large skylight hatch. Plus a 24in TV/DVD combo mounted on a swivel bracket, which can also be viewed from the dinette. I was just as impressed with the sheer amount of storage provided by the screwed-in overhead lockers, robes with cutouts, dressers and under-bed (where the house batteries are located) which can also be accessed at floor level.
Immediately to the left of the entry door, and occupying a fair whack of the nearside wall, is a modern and practical kitchen. It has almost all the culinary requisites for extended off-grid sojourns including a Swift four-burner cooktop (all gas) and full oven, Slimline rangehood, good-sized square sink and drainer, flick mixer tap, full splashback, and sufficient rolled-edge benchtop space. The only downside was the absence of a pull-out pantry, which is optional.
Directly across from the entry door is a 190L Dometic RMDX21 three-way fridge-freezer, with a safely accessible 25L Sphere microwave above. Both are sandwiched between the dinette and rear ensuite. Additionally, I’ve come to expect from Legend Caravans that the galley would also be laden with storage complete with piano-hinged and gas-assisted cupboards, and metal-sided drawers.
Directly opposite is a stylish and relaxing four-seater cafe dinette. I took a shining to the upholstery-matching recessed flip-out footrests, which have steel bi-fold latches for added support. At one point, I even stretched out in comfort on the seating to study a Hema map of the region. Legend has employed some lateral thinking with heaps of overhead storage space, and a compartment for books, magazines etc. under the tri-fold table.
The contemporary rear full-width ensuite is sure to impress the intrepid female traveller. Obviously the highlights are a recessed Sphere 3.2kg top-loading washing machine, which is not only convenient but increases benchtop space, full-height fibreglass shower with opaque door for added privacy, Thetford cassette toilet, full-width mirror, and an oval-shaped washbasin built into the vanity benchtop. There’s also a recessed sliding door, with a single-barrel lock and cabin hook, for even more privacy, 12V extraction hatches above the shower and toilet, and abundant storage above and below the vanity.
THE BOTTOM LINE
At $74,990, as reviewed, the Trackline Off-Road is poised to turn the offroad caravan market on its ear! It’s a made-to-measure offroader that’s purpose-built for tackling the outback and trekking towards new frontiers.
Those adventurous souls that relish perennial offroad pilgrimages will gravitate to the Trackline’s special qualities… and, in my opinion, it could become the stuff of legends!
