Slide outs have become popular features on caravans and motorhomes during the past decade. They have revolutionised space utilisation, combining compactness for travelling with spaciousness when camping.

But the idea of the slide out has been around for a long time. This 1936 vintage caravan belongs to Bob and Yvonne Kerr of Sydney and it has a nifty slide out. This amazing feature is over 70 years old.

When folded up for travelling, a three-level shelf unit in the kitchen covers the sink. But when camping, the shelf unit slides out to expose the sink and provide convenient storage for cooking utensils.
