The answers to these questions and many more are now available at the tap of a finger with the release of a new app for visitors to Victoria’s Gippsland Lakes region.
The area is very popular with caravanners and they can now immerse themselves more fully into the region’s exceptional biodiversity with the launch of the Wildlife Field Guide to the Gippsland Lakes app, which aims teach people about the local wildlife.
The free app for smartphones and tablets will help visitors identify more than 250 species which live in the Gippsland Lakes catchment area.
The app was released by Museum Victoria and Parks Victoria and includes beautiful images, sound recordings and helpful tips and information.
Features include the frog calls for 16 different frog species, information on more than 80 birds, 22 fish, 22 reptiles and a range of mammals and insects.
Once the app has been downloaded, all its content is available offline, so you don’t need to worry about having enough coverage ‘out bush’ to use it properly.
Parks Victoria area chief ranger Jeremy Tscharke said. “The app will be a great tool for experienced wildlife enthusiasts and the novice wanting to learn more about the amazing wildlife that call Gippsland Lakes their home”.
The app is an based on data from the Gippsland Lakes Bioscan wildlife surveys and public engagement events run by Museum Victoria, Parks Victoria and partners in 2014 and 2015.
An Android version of the app is expected to be released later this year.
