Convict-themed cabins, a pizza oven made out of prison stone, African safari-style tents – you’d be forgiven for thinking these things had nothing in common.
However, they are just some of the $800,000 worth of upgrades that the BIG4 Port Arthur Holiday Park in Port Arthur, Tas, has made to its facilities.
The park, which is located just 1km from the Port Arthur Historical Site, recently opened its new convict-themed Peninsula Cabins and glamping Safari Tents.
The two new Peninsula Cabins have two bedrooms, a spacious living area, spa bath and outdoor barbecue and deck. While the two new Safari Tents show glamping is the way of the future at BIG4 Port Arthur Holiday Park.
Along with the new accommodation, the park has also renovated its camp kitchen, adding a pizza oven made from heritage stone sourced from Port Arthur’s Historic Site.
Stonemason David Stone said he could easily identify where most of stone in the oven was taken from.
“I can go as far as pointing out which stone came from a windowsill at the penitentiary,” Mr Stone said.
