On our circuit of the Qld outback we found van parks were mostly full and have had a great season to date. Owners of the Bailey Bar Caravan Park in Charleville, Wendy O'hern and Julian Delchau told Denyse and I that their season started in February, and they have been mostly full ever since. The ‘No powered sites’ sign was out before midday the day we arrived. Fortunately, we always book at least one day ahead during the tourist period now.
The Discovery Parks - Longreach was almost full each night we were there, while the Jundah Caravan Park had all lots powered sites in use when we arrived, so we stayed at the newly developed park beside the pub. The temperature was down to zero that night.
Windorah Caravan Park was filled up by around 3pm each day we stayed, and the excess went into the paddock next door (without power on these very cold nights).
The Channel Country Caravan Park in Quilpie was also having a great season and it was below freezing with a frost when we called. Perhaps the cold nights were part of the reason powered sites were filling so fast.
It has been unseasonably cold, with rain causing the camp areas beside rivers to be very boggy. We have noticed many more camper trailers around this year. – Tony Allsop.
